The History of PFLAG
For over fifty years, PFLAG has been where LGBTQ+ people, families, and allies have come together in pursuit of justice and affirmation—and always leading with love.
What began as a letter from the mother of a gay son who witnessed his brutal attack as police stood by and watched, led to a march with parent and child side by side. In 1973, Jeanne Manford convened a group of parents and families with their lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer loved ones that birthed a movement of millions. Driven by a mission to create a caring, just, and affirming world for LGBTQ+ people and those who love them – PFLAG has been a steady presence and connector for LGBTQ+ people with community, parents and families with support, and allies with education and resources to advocate for justice and equity.
PFLAG is an organization of LGBTQ+ people, parents, families, and allies who work together to create an equitable and inclusive world. We are hundreds of thousands of people and hundreds of chapters from coast to coast who are leading with love to support families, educate allies, and advocate for just, equitable, and inclusive legislation and policies. Since our founding in 1973, PFLAG works every day to ensure LGBTQ+ people everywhere are safe, celebrated, empowered, and loved.

Provide Support – PFLAG facilitates monthly in-person convenings. Monthly convenings range from support group for parents, families, and allies of QT+ (queer, trans, plus) folx. We also provide periodic programs for special topics and events.
Offer Education – As part of our support groups, we provide a different education topic relevant to the time of year (back-to-school, coming out, etc.). We are continually developing our offerings for QT+ individuals, as well as parents/families and allies. We explore the intersection of identities, share our stories, and discuss QT+-specific education topics. We also do periodic special programs like suicide prevention training, protecting trans youth, and others.
Advocate – PFLAG strives to partner with other local and National organizations to educate key decision-makers about the issues that affect our loved ones and families, and to teach others how to use their voices to amplify our efforts toward a more equitable, and just world for the LGBTQ+ community.
